yes you will have to connect one of the PC with the other and then connect the other PC with the normal internet connection.

yes it's possible, But one thing if u want to connect pc-pc u have to use cross-over cable. And if internet is in one pc u need to share the internet using proxy or internet connection sharing.

You need to buy a switch. Plug your internet cable into the switch and then plug both your PC's into the switch. This is assuming you have cable or DSL connection.

I would connect both PCs to a hub then connect the hub to a router. If you change the Workgroup on the two PCs the same name, (ie MyNetwork or MyHomePCS) then you can share files.

If distance is your concern, you should be able to use a 10m cable. In fact, the signal through a cat 5 network cable is rated to carry as far as 100m, so 10m should be fine.
