The guy practically abolished apartheid in South Africa. He is still a strong force in his country.
Is the Queen ignoring him or is there another reason.

Isn't South Africa a member of the commonwealth with Queen Elizabeth as the Head of the Commonwealth? If Nelson Mandela is a member of the Commonwealth and therefore a subject of the queen shouldn't he be Knighted?

She may not have knighted him but she's hardly ignored him. The Queen made him an honorary member of the Order of Merit in 1995.

The Order of Merit, founded in 1902 by King Edward VII, is a special mark of honour conferred by The Sovereign on individuals of exceptional distinction in the arts, learning, sciences and other areas. Appointments to the Order are in The Sovereign's personal gift and ministerial advice is not required.

Also, foreign citizens have been knighted by the Queen. Chancellor Kohl, President Mitterrand and Mayor Giuliani of New York are three examples of those given honorary knighthoods.

First of all you need to find out which queen you're talking about. There's actually quite a few of them. And then when you do find out you'll practically have answered your own question. The queen you refer to has no jurisdiction over Mr. Mandela. South Africa is a sovereign nation with a president as head of state. The "queen" you refer to is probably the monarch of great britain--she can only knight citizens of that country.

South Africa is no longer part of the Commonwealth. However, foreign nationals can be knighted.

Nelson Mandela or as we in South Africa call him Madeba (pronounced maa-dee-ba), is not from the UK, so he isn't eligible to be knighted. He has won a Nobel Prize though, which is ideal cos he seriously has changed our life here in South Africa.
