Well, when ants find a food source, they leave a trail of pheromones (scents) that lead to the food and back to the ant hill... and so when ants are moving up and down this trail they bump into each other, because they are all following one path of pheromones.

they dont collide, they use their feelers on top of their head to communicate with one another, basically they walk up to one another and exchange a short ant like conversation, what information they exchange is relatively unknowen, but it does look like that are constantly bumping into one another
