For my son's sixth birthday we tye dyed shirts. Not only did the kids have a great time making them but they also had a great keepsake.
To make shirts you will need one PREWASHED white tshirt for each child, a box of sturdy rubber bands, clothes dyes in various colors and a box of gallon ziplock bags.
The easiest decorations are swirls and donuts.
For swirls:
lay tshirt flat
using a fork spin the shirt into a tight circle (start anywhere on shirt)
using rubber bands secure the outside edge and then make pie wedges.
For donuts:
lay shirt flat
pinch all layers and wrap tightly in rubber bands
Put dye in squeeze or squirt bottles and decorate as you wish just be sure to dye both sides of the shirt.
Place in ziplock.Send home with following instructions:
After 24 hours rinse shirt (still tied) in cold water
untie and rinse again
dry in dryer to set color
Good luck.

"(no clowns)"
Yes. I couldn't agree more. I hate clowns even more than you lot do.
Do a guttersludge. No, not me, that costs extra. A guttersludge is one of the cheapest and funniest experiences a kid could have.
What you need:
A 100mm (4 inch) PVC/nylon gutter (like the ones on your house.)
Enough tin-foil to cover the concave surface (the inside of it.)
About 15 moms you know to make a gooey dessert of some sort.
As many teaspoons as you have kids at the bash.
What you do:
Lay the foil on the inside of the pipe and toss all the desserts together into the gutter - voila! Le 'guttersludge' c'est magnifiqué!
Another idea: Get hold of some balloons, blow 'em up and tie them to every kid's right shoe - get them to run around all nuts-like and try to pop each-other's balloons; last one with a balloon wins.
Oh, and order Taco Bell. Or KFC. Always goes down well. The heart of the party is the food you have. Get the dad's some beer too.

Have a theme party, if she is into Barbie, then all the girls dress as Barbie's and the boys dress as Ken - Kids love dressing up - or have face painting and do a BBQ in the garden, most children just want to run around and play, if you have a paddling pool you could have a beach party, where they all come in their swimming custums and have the whole day outside (saves getting your place untidy) - try not to worry too much, do a pass the parcel - party games for children don't really change over the years, so just try and remember what used to make you happy when you were a kid

Bratz - same but with a bratz theme
Saddle Club - birthday party at a riding school......

six year old girls? I would think maybe dolls and dress up and maybe let them do that serving tea or dinner thing, clowns are over rated, and whatever you do if the kids have a place and a few props like some fancy clothes that you don't use or some dolls or some old kitchen stuff they will likely at age six have a real good time in spite of what anybody does to entertain them.

It depends on what she likes. Every 6 yr. old kid has something that they REALLY like and just go with that theme. Also most 6 yr. olds love sweets. Also if its a party for eight 6 yr old girls do a little bit more and make sure they have something for themselves! Usually 6 yr. olds aren't too good with sharing their stuff. Do some games such as pin the donkey or pinata. Just get creative! They love to do lots of things. Unless their spoiled brats but even at that they would love it.

A treaure hunt is always good fun. You could try small prizes dotted round, with clues to the main prize (or prizes). Or how about a dressing up party? Princesses, Disney characters, etc. Or, a hair dressing party? Loved the idea about temporary tattoos by the way!

I think you should have a theme, a pyjamas party with jumping castle with lots of games such as musical chairs, duck duck goose, pin tail on the donkey etc... there's loads of games ideas on the net. And don't forget to make lolly bags for the kids.
Hope this helps.
