The Recycle Triangle is an International Symbol, meaning that when anyone uderstands that that symbols, means that the items is a recycleable item. This would make people that self concious about environment, would try to put the bottle in a recycling bin, and not mix it up with normal non-recycleable trash. The numbers represent the type of plastic the bottle is made of, since different plastic may requires different treatment, so the number is as important as it is, since it is virtually impossible for the recycling facility to test what the plastic type is for all of the thing they recycles.

There are different types of plastic. Each has a number (I've seen 1 thru 7). Some communities have the capability to recycle all, others (like mine) just 1's and 2's.

The number represents the type of plastic. The foam meat come packaged in is one number while drinks usually come in "2" or "1". You can't recycle different types of plastic the same way, so this number is very important if you're thinking of recycling.

The triangular arrow tells you that it is recyclable and the number tells you what type of plastic it is. For example a 1 is Polyethylene Terephalate Ethylene which is used for such products as soft drink, juice, water, detergent, and cleaner bottles. Also used for cooking and peanut butter jars.

As the others have said the triangle is that it is recyclable the number is the type of plastic. The higher the number the more stable or nonreactive the plastic is ie. more expensive the less likely the chemicals will leach out into what it is containing. "7" is polycarbonate. Very strong chemically stable and relatively expensive as plastics go.

The triangle means that the item is recyclable. The number within that triangle means the grade/level of it's ability to be recycled. From what I know/remember if it has the number 6 on it, it means it's very recyclable and if it has the number 1 on it, it means it recycles but very little of it is recyclable.
