I would like some sort of fly trap as the electrical ones do not seem to work

Citronella candles are good for keeping insects away and they smell nice too! If you search the Internet you should be able to find a non-electric fly killer - they have something sweet inside, which attracts the flies but there is no way out again for them.

Hi, we're in the same boat, I live in Spain too, and the flies drive me mad!

The only thing that I've found which works is something which can be bought in "El Corte Ingles" or "Dunnes Stores" - it is a round plastic container, with a hole in the bottom, which you hang from the ceiling or a beam etc...

You fill the area around the hole with a sachet which comes with the trap, and add water. The flies get in when they smell the concoction, but they can't get out again.

It really works!! You have to empty and refill it every few days but it's very worth it!
