That's a common problem for most PC, make sure that you defragment your computer every week, that certainly helps. You also have to check the system resources that you have, you can see that when you right click may computer and select properties, under General tab you will see the in formations, furthermore, open your task manager and check your CPU usage for XP it should not go beyond 6%.
Let me know then

Your system resources sound like they are being overload - you can see if this is the case using the SYSTEM MONITORING System tool.
If this is the case your processor may not be powerful enough, or you may be able to resolve the situation by adding ram - if you are capturing video you should really look at having 1GB of RAM if you are running other applications at the same time.

capturing causes the video to have to slow down for the computer to use the system to save the image, like trying to use a half a gallon jug of water to carry a full gallon of water

You may have too much running in the background (programs) and the processor cannot handle it. Check to see how much you have running and turn off or disable those that are safe to. If you are not sure research them in yahoo search engine. Good Luck!

I'm no expert, but I have noticed some things while using my computers.
If I am short on RAM, processing power, or have a cheesy video card, I get such problems.
