Is it possible to have a false start with your period?

I thought I had started my period a couple of months ago but I have not had one since. I don't want to go see a doctor though. Please help.

Yes it's possible. Sometimes there's spotting before your period starts, even when you've had it for a while. Sometimes when you first start your period there will be spotting as well.

It's a start, not a false one. At first your period will be very irregular. Every few months is not out of the norm at all. In a few years, if it doesn't become regular (every 4 weeks or so) then I'd start to worry. You should see a gynecologist anyway, but just for your first checkup. It should generally be a visual inspection, with the doctor also checking your abdomen with her hands, but nobody's going to shove a big cold metal speculum into you at this point so there's nothing to be afraid of.

Yes angel, it is perfectly normal.

My friends daughter had a period when she was 13 then didn't see another one until 7 months later when she was 14.

I personally had a period at 10 and then started properly when I was 11 ( nearly 12 ) .... No need for a doctor babe.

Don't worry, just enjoy being period free.

well anything is possible. I remember though when i started my period when i was 11 years old it started all at once. But maybe your body is getting ready for it and it stopped cause in the beginning it is like you will only bleed (starting out brown) just for like a couple of days until your body is getting use to it then you will have regular periods.

Maybe you need to talk to other people your age and ask if this has happened to them.

Go to http://www.kotex.com
(Talk teen)

Just type in your questions in your search box and so much stuff will show up.

If you do not start your period by age 16 then you should see a doctor, don't be afraid to talk to your mother cause that is why she is there.

Good luck

I'm 15 and started my period when i was 14. At first it was just a spot then nothing for four months. After that it started again and started to stay in a (sort of!) regular pattern. Going to the doctor can be embarrassing so i don't think you need to worry about anything yet. If it is really bothering you talk to female members of family. It's not embarrassing once you've started talking and they WILL understand. JUST DON'T PANIC- THERE'S NO NEED!

It not only possible but the first few months/years of periods can be HIGHLY irregular and take ages to settle down. See these links for more details:

There is no reason to panic at this stage, but if you start feeling ill or lethagic I'm afraid a trip to the doctor may be needed. You can request to see a female doctor and they should be able to help you out without too much embarrasment.

And bear in mind, it could be worse, my first period caused me to throw up on the vicar!

Stress doesn't help. Having checked out another question of yours, you're under a bit of that at the moment. I've had my period since 12, but even now, if I'm under stress it can be up to a week late. For me, that is scary! For you, it could be months between periods, but if you're really worried, do see someone, or at the very least talk to your mum.

BTW, you could see the practice nurse, who is usually MUCH nicer than the doctor!

I remember there being four months between my first and second ever periods. It can take some time for you to settle down into a regular cycle. If there is ever the possibility you may be pregnant then go and see your doctor.

I was like that. I wouldn't get my period for months at a time but I knew I wasn't pregnant because I wasn't having sex. Some people said go to the doctor but I said nah! Then eventually my period would just start coming regularly. BUT if you have been having sex, then you should go to the doctor.

This sounds more than normal, my daughter had the same thing, not everyone regulates straight away. This can take some time, everyone is different, some regulate straight away others can have a period and then go months without one and then have one monthly for a few months then miss it for several, this is the norm and nothing to worry about.

When you start your period it is always irregular. you'll find that after a while it will regulate itself. Some girls, due to size, metabolism or other health problems/conditions can have more/less periods than others, so don't fret. If you are really worried, speak to your mum, a friend, an older girl you feel comfortable with. We all went through it and know how weird it is!
