At every single office in the world. Some are definitely worse than others though. Alot of it is benign and not a big deal. Unfortunately some is malicious and petty, I assume that is what your wondering about. I bet you can't really think of a high percentage of gossip that was actually ever positive
People are petty and childish to a large degree. I believe this stems from insecurity. I find the best ways to deal with things is to never discuss you personal life except with a few trusted friends. Never give them the ammo to do anything and if it does get bad confront them and failing that, go to a supervisor. It tends to get worse if you are moving up the chain as the jealousy and rivalry becomes more intense - if you become a threat. It goes with the territory.
I remember a quote from Matt Groening (creator of the Simpsons) who said that life is more like 'Survivor' than what he satirizes. You form alliances and then cut them loose if you have to - and they might do the same to you when it is to their benefit. One day they might be gossiping to you, the next day its about you. Sad but true.
It's best not to say too much about others and try to keep out of it. Some people will actually want a response from you to their gossip and then will quote you to others.

It happens everywhere, People are rumor mills, there is nothing that can be done about it. Just by posting this question you are in fact gossiping about the gossip at your office. it can't be helped. It's just human communication.
Besides if You couldn't discuss your boss's new toupee, or the receptionist's affinity for forgetting her underwear when she wears short skirts. then what would be discussed at the water cooler..... Work perhaps??? Don't you take a break to get away from work for a moment?

i used to work in a taxi office and that was the worse place I've ever come across people who gossip so much wasn't so much the girls in the office well we could go for it! but the drivers were terrible u would get in there car to take u home and would get out knowing all sorts about everyone and anyone, also they knew pretty much about what u got up to at the weekend what time u crawled out of the nightclub and who with.

its not only where you work- its really bad where i work too, i just choose not to participate in the gossip and i avoid telling anyone anything that could become gossip later. i prefer to keep my own counsel. if i have stuff to talk about that is getting to me, my friend who's work is just as bad as mine and i go out for food and a beer at a local bar and grill.

I think long skirts are excellent, you're protected up with no restrictions of slacks.

Gossip spoken means nothing. Gossip heard is the problem. Don't listen.

You should visit a staff room in a high school...they are quite possibly the worst places for gossip and in-fighting.

The more women in an office, the more gossip, that's just the way it is.
Walk away if you feel offended by it.
