Ok, please ignore the last answerer who recommended you to download AVG, Spybot and Lavasoft Ad-Aware. These were good programs maybe 2 years ago but are consistently failing their users now. I used to have all three of these programs installed but have now uninstalled and replaced with paid-for programs as I was sick of getting infected due to their lacking protection skills.

If you perform some research on security vendor protection scores you will find that AVG, Lavasoft and Spybot are now the worst programs available for malware/virus protection yet people seem blind to this fact because they are free. I would rather pay 20 dollars and have some decent protection...

My recommendation would be a program called Prevx1. This has the best protection and removal abilities/scores of all security programs currently available. I recently installed this on a friends PC that had AVG active, and Prevx went on to remove over 30 infections AVG had missed.

You can read more information and download a free trial of Prevx from their website:

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (www.spywareblaster.com)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

update your antivirus program. Do a full scan. If that doesn't work, do an online virus scan with symantec, etc.
