Most hard drives use the standard IDE interface. Therefore, if the cable fits the hard drive, it should work.

As to whether XP will work on the new system - maybe.

Note: the antipiracy software built into XP may be a probelm. If it detects a certain number of changes in system configuration, it may determine that the hard drive has been moved into a new computer and not function until a new Product Key is used. Contact Microsoft and try to get them to give you a new product key.

Also, depending on the configuration of the original and destination PC, the boot process may be prevented. If you want to install the second hard drive as a slave to the drive with Windows ME on it and then configure an dual-boot system, it won't work. You'll have to reinstall Windows XP on the second drive to get the proper boot configuration.

If your Compaq tower has room for the hard drive then yes, brand name has nothing to do with internal hardware or software, it has to do with the tower itself if there is room for expansion. You can build a computer with all name brand parts and come out cheaper, computers are like buying shoes, just paying for the name.
