There have been studies that found that even if you fake a smile (as long as you fake it really well, with the corners of your eyes turned up as they do when you give a genuine smile), it releases chemicals in your brain that are present when you are actually happy and smiling sincerely. In other words, smiling makes you feel good. It also puts other people at ease and makes them like you more. Supposedly, according to some evolutionary biologists, a smile is actually very similar to an expression of fear, and that's why it is polite to smile at strangers--you're showing them that you are a little bit afraid of them, and therefore, not a threat to them. That could explain why it is generally less socially acceptable for women to refrain from smiling than it is for men, and why women often smile wider than men do--because you're making yourself a bit vulnerable when you smile, and women are supposed to be the soft vulnerable ones.
