Good question.
there are many current and relavant social conflicts going on today, i will address three.

Before i begin i believe conflict is very productive, for example Slavery and abolitionst, The vote and sufferagist, Jim Crow and Martin Luther KIng, vietnam and protesters.

regardless of where you stand on any of these, there were forces at work for both sides, it is a matter of opinion if the success of progressive movements were good for the morality and modernity of our current culture and society.

I would argue yes, that the most marginalized groups who need help will eventually win if the cause is just..

Now in my opinion these are three of the current real pending socialt conflicts.

1) The war in Iraq
specifcally the ligitamacy of Pre emptive doctrine, the expanding presidetial powers, the interperation of constituanal limits, as well as the power of the president in a declared war that is against terror and not nation states, meaning that war could go on forever.

2) Religion
The issue in conflict stem from the role of governement in providing funds for religous based groups without adovcacy, the role of religion in public institutions, the role of religion in political machines, the divide within religon between the extermist and moderates, the use of religion to justify government intervetion into reproductive rights (Griswold vs. Conneticut and Roe vs wade), Gay marriage.

3) The social conflict between rich and poor.
This conflict ranges from social programs to tax cuts, healthcare to corporate welfare, tax loopholes, the concentration of wealth, minmum wage, deficit spending, inflation, exporting of jobs, subsides, education, domestic issues, the rising enegry cost, even race can be included into this conflict, as well as moral issues....

Each issue has arguments for and against....is there a right answer or postition...it depends on the poeple and the results.....
MLK was outnumbered and had everything against him.....we celebrate him now not the people who stood in his way.

karma

As I go through life, fixing my mistakes one at a time, I’ve learned a thing or two about Karma, and part of keeping good Karma is sharing it with others. I hope these notions help you as much as they’ve helped me.
Do good things and good things will happen to you. Do bad things and it will come back and bite you in the ***.

If you want a better life, you need to be a better person.

Bad luck might be contagious. It wouldn’t be fair to bring someone into your life until you clean yours up.

Never underestimate the power of confidence. And never underestimate fifteen beers, a little enlightenment, and the power of Rob Base and DJ Easy Rock.

A person needs a little rest after having his moustache tickled at a gay bar.

You have to do the hard things in life sooner or later.

If you want the reward, you have to do the work.

The secret to life is fixing all the bad things that you’ve done.

Whether picking up trash, returning stolen merchandise, or helping a homosexual find love, it always has the same reward… feeling good about yourself.

Karma. You got to love it.

Racism is one, and no it is not a productive conflict. It only proves that those who are racist NEED help. I am a eskimo from Alaska and have seen racism first hand. In my opinion, if you think you are better than someone because of their race, you need to take another look in the mirror. There is also conflict between those drawing welfare, and those not. People tend to look down on them. Well, I was there also, does that make me less of a human being? I think not.

A) How can any conflict be productive?

B) Better to ask what type of social conflict DOESN"T exist in America, because, sweetheart, we got every last one there is.

I have a very good friend with which I regularly have verbal conflicts over a plethora of issues.

We both gain from this mental conflict by finding the flaws in our beliefs, and thus coming to a better set of ideals about the discussed things.

No they are all negative. Racism, Sexism, Ageism, gangs, poverty, the list is almost endless.

Look at New Orleans. The middle class have been helped and are now safe and comfortable. The poor have got very little help and will be livin in trailers for years. Black and poor and some are old as well. You can't get much more disadvantaged than that.
