it could be a culture thing. many people think that the french are rude, or that italian men are overly arrogant. When I live in Japan I could have thought that Japanese on the train system were rude trying to get onto the train the way they do pushing each other all in at once, but I don't that is just thier culture, they do not assume that someone is being rude like many americans would. The japanese just figure, it is crowded, and we all crowd together. It is probably just a misundertanding of culture. But then again, I for the most part try and see the better part of things, maybe I am wrong and they are rude?

the ugly American stereotype has been out there for awhile. the quiet, well-manner Americans are usually mistaken for Canadians or Europeans!

I lived overseas for 10 years and it was easy to spot 'fresh' Americans because they usually dressed inappropriately (overly casual in a metropolitan setting), spoken VERY loudly, and generally made it obvious they were from the US of A. This approach may work well in most of the US, but others think this is culturally insensitive. I have to agree.

But not all Americans are that way! What is great about Americans is the variety and diversity that are out there. Generally Americans are also known to be friendly, even if superficially. Better than unfriendly!

I think because one of the most city visited in The US by foreigner is New York. People in NY for some reason are very rude . They don't hold the elevator door, they actually don't hold any door. If you are from another country visiting NY and when you are about to get in a store and the person in front of you slam the door on your face instead to hold it, or when you are trying to get a cab come someone and steal it from you, or you are walking peacefully on the street and come someone behind you walking so fast that almost run over you, would give you the feeling of a rude people. Some simple things we do all day like getting a cab, walk on the streets, or holding a door for the person behind you there in NY doesn't happen and unfortunately people generalize new yorker's with all Americans.
I've been lived here for while and I remember in the beginning used to have the wrong idea about Americana's matters. Omly when I started to visit others cities like Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia I realized that American people are actually polite.
When I asked a new yorker about the reason for this attitude, my boyfriend at that time whom was a new yorker told me "because people here work a lot and they can't waist their time, time is money!!!"...That was his answer.
PS: there is another thing they do here too that drives me crazy. After you say thank you instead of replying you with a welcome or not a problem, some just say "hanhan" or nothing.
It's unoying for someone whom are not used to with a "hanhan" after a thank you .

I don't think that Americans are rude but they have strange habits that appear rude to us Canadians. My biggest pet peeve when doing customer service was when you say thank you or have a nice day to an American on the phone, in most cases, they will say, "Uh huh." Now why can't they say, "have a lovely day yourself?" No they take the passive approach and I guess that comes from years of doing it like that. But I only wished Americans could break-free of that habit. It just seem downright rude and passive.

Electing the governments over n over again though they fail in foreign policies, Time to time opinion polls about the policies run by Governments makes the world feel that Americans do not change even the world see that the foreign policy of America is failing. When the world see that the mind set of American does not change with this failing policies, people around the world are tend to think that Americans are rude. In my opinion, Americans are not rude but its just that they fall to the false justifications, false propaganda and false judgements of their Governments. For me a common American is a simple person who knows to work for 5 days n booze and enjoy for the rest of two.

Common American will not bother himself much thinking of policies as long as he is able to manage with his/her bills...:)

Don't think Americans are rude. If anything they are probably (insincerely) over polite.

Arrogance now! WOW!! The most arrogant nation on earth. They seem to think anyone who is not American is at best a sub-species.

Same reason we get stereotypical views of any country. We don't take the time to really understand the different cultures. What can seem harmless in one culture could be very offensive in another. We judge others by our own culture rather then educating ourselves on theirs.
