why the sense of self doesn't go away? is your brain/mind ever completly shut down? i don't think so. it slows down and changes frequencies when u sleep. to completely lose ur sense of self.. the sense of knowing theres an "I" or self would be what buddists call the state of mind that is true enlightment ( i think thats right ) .. your personality it hard wired into ur mind by neural connections / memories.. those fad and change,, as do personalities do slowly over time.

How can you tell if your personality is the same when you are asleep? During the course of a normal day - people can exhibit several different personalities - while at work, at home, with friends, in a pub/bar etc. So, which personality is dominant when you sleep? Perhaps its a totally new one!

If anything, your personality should be exaggerated, because your subconscious is in control when you are sleeping. If you were to subscribe to Freudian psychology you may believe that the id lives in the subconscious, and is usually balanced out by the super-ego's morality and norms. In sleep, there is little call for the super-ego, and as such the id should be able to roam free. This may explain indulgent fantasies, involving sexual or violent content. Therefore your actual desires should be very prominent here, more so than in waking life, as theyare unconstrained by reality.
What your desires are, and what your id desires will be affected by your personality, e.g. if you are a lazy individual you may dream of lethargy and inactivity, e.g. reclining in a comfortable chair. If you are a lustful person your dreams may be passionate etc. Your dreams are your fantasies communicated to you, or your brain's messages to you about what's happening in your life, and without external intrusions, all teh information you receive should be focused on yourself. As such, your sense of self should if anything be stronger in sleep.

maybe because we are still ourselves even asleep while our brains are still working on the problems of the day we just spent. Or maybe if we are talking out loud for instance our spirit is expressing itself, our spirit is a large part of us and the personality in this life can somehow imprint our next lives. So since sleeping is being 'unconscious" is kind of like letting your mind and spirit get to know each other and soak in the events of the day and help you learn and make sense of them. Figure out our version of this, I am sure you will get many answers. maybe meditate on it! Sleep tight.

Because Personality is a Trait and not a Sence is my read on it. Personality is like the Body Human or basic engine that operates motor function, to a lesser degree than autotaumic, but is still there and active.

My room mate becomes like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde! Night is scary cause I never know who is walking down the hall way. Can be the mean , cuss er, hitter, Or awake and nice. It is like living with two different people. Asleep room mate and daytime awake room mate. Wish they both paid the rent! Instead of just one of them.

Because your genetics and the hard wiring of your brain remain the same. And you maintain your long-term memory of who you are. While you are sleeping, your brain maintains and works on the same neuronal / electrical pathways established while you're awake.
