I think that you have used Day first because day is the short word of the two. That's why any one use day first followed by night.
Comming to your question, It is a tricky one I'll ask you one similar one "Which comes first hen or egg"
In my view, if light had to come first there would be darkness before that and vice versa but my answer to your question is towards Darkness

Neither. Day and Night are a cycle. A cycle is a regular and circular procession of 2 or more events. Now, think of a circle. Can you tell me where it begins or ends. No, you can't because it doesn't have a fixed beginning or ending.... ;-)
