yes there are...and very good ones...there is still megadeth alive which is great for me, Dave Mustaine still reigning in the metal scene unlike the already buried Metallica in spite their great new bassist..r.i.p...haven't you heard about the mighty Gigantour with great metal bands running in US? with dream theater, megadeth, fear factory...if you want to hear something a little bit more recent there is Iced Earth a great band! my favorite one...but if you want a really great, the greatest powerprog metal band in the scene which is from US there is Symphony-X , Michael Romeo is a great guitarist, one of the best of all times...all this bands have already a long story in some cases but they are all still recording great albums and they still making history...

I vote disturbed, i know that they are a little black metal but unlike most other death and black metal bands they don't devote there entire songs to screaming there heads off, they have a few small but good guitar solo's in there new album and the lead singers voice is very good in my opinion, there worth checking out if you havn't already heard them, and incase your wondering, there first album "the sickness" is probably the most death metal album, but still very decent, then there second one "believe" has more soft but still very good songs, then "ten thousand fists" is just amazing, so check them out.

Nevermore. There new album This Godless Endevor has lots of kick *** solos and awesome lyrics. Lamb of God. They got some pretty good riffs, the lead singers screams a lot so this might not be the best one. Also God Forbid. These guys know how to play their instrument. Their new album IV the constitution of treason is awesome. Their songs are well written and its not just useless screaming.

I love Metallica & Megadeth.
I think the only power, thrash &march metal band that has survived the 2000 to now is "MANOWAR",
just listen to it's latest album & compare it to latest album of other amazing metal bands like Metallica & see that Manowar (the 26 year band) is getting better every year!

I know what you mean man. Metal today just isn't what it used to be at all. Most of the guitarist aren't as musically inclined as they used to be back then. Metallica's awsome don't get me wrong but have you noticed thier music isn't as heavy or good as it used to be in the 80's. It all started to downward spiral after the black album.

THREE AMERICAN BANDS that haven't been mentioned that are definitely worth checking out based on your tastes are: PSYCHOTIC WALTZ, DALI'S DILEMMA, and please check out SHADOW GALLERY immediately!!! Just buy or download their entire discography (of all three bands I just mentioned) and thank me later :))
Others that have not been mentioned yet:
NEVERMORE (Can't even believe nobody mentioned them yet... Just please check them out if you don't know them)
ZERO HOUR (Just get their albums please)
ETERNITY X (Wow, love them, very unique, progressive, try "The Edge" or "Mind Games")
TOURNIQUET (Extremely talented, very unique, Christian influences FYI in case you're interested)
CONTROL DENIED (With Chuck Schuldiner of DEATH, an American classic, but you might not like them, or you might!)
ANACRUSIS (Technical, "wow how can human beings play that sh*t" metal)
SAVATAGE (Really good, for a while had the same guitarist as Testament, see below)
FAITH NO MORE (Come on, man!!)
SPASTIC INK (Technical/speed, very different, incredible talent, check out Ron Jarzombek's other projects as well... He is from WATCHTOWER, another USA metal band, and Bobby Jarzombek's brother (Bobby was drummer for Juggernaut, Spastic Ink, Halford, PAINMUSEUM (American, really good) now working on Sebastian Bach's solo project)... "Ink Compatible" has vocals if you need them, otherwise "Ink Complete" is instrumental)
NOVEMBER'S DOOM (Excellent)
PANTERA (You probably know them)
LAMB OF GOD (Not my fav, sorry, worth mentioning though)
SLAYER (Not my fav either, worth mentioning though)
Mentioned already:
Dream Theater (You would LOVE them)
Testament (Their guitarist also started a very worthy jazz/fusion trio, the Alex Skolnick Trio. Check them out, they rule!!)
Iced Earth (LOVE)
Symphony-X (You would drool over them. Whoever posted this suggestion was spot-on!!)
