Go to this site. It is a model of how the earth travels around the sun. Note the tilt of the earth and how it is always pointed one direction. Pay attention to the North Pole and the South Pole. Notice at what points in the orbit that they receive constant sunlight and when they receive no sunlight. This will help illustrate how it is possible that the far north and the far south of our earth can have such long periods of darkness and light. I hope this helps.

Hello. At the Equinoxes, (meaning)- literally equal day and night), then the Earth is so positioned as to recive equal daytime and nightime hours.

At least,in the Northern Hemisphere..
for the Southern hemisphere,it's
all reversed.

I once e-mailed with a lady
named Pam, in New Zealdnd, which is close to the Internation Date Line,in the Pacific Ocean.

It was about 13 hours of clock time, separating us, To call her on the phone,I'd have to wait up until the middle of the night, 3 a.m. in
Chicago.

But, more to the point of your question:

The Earth is a Sphere--a globe.

And the closer one may be to either the North Pole, or the South Pole, the stranger things can get.

Because the earth is TILTED, in its rotation about Sol.

So thus, Alaska can have
"Seasons", as if they were a single day. If the North Pole is pointed toward the Sun,there will be no nightimes.(for about six months)

On the other pole of this planet, the south pole, while the North has constant daylight, the S.P will have
six months of dark night..

It's because the earth is tilted 23.5 degrees so half the year the Arctic circle is completely facing the sun. During the other half of the year the Arctic circle is facing completely away from the sun so that it never sees a drop of sunlight.
