Could you be talking about Asteria's Fanfic - go to www.angelfire.com/pw/asteria/chappy2 to read an extract of the second chapter which tells about a redheaded girl (Diane) and her meeting with a cobalt dragon.
Good Luck

Yes, I remember the book. I am sure the title was Vermillion and would have been published in the late '40s or early '50s or possibly pre-war.

Could it be this?

JONES, IDWAL Vermillion. New York: Prentice-Hall, (1947).

8vo, red-stamped blue cloth, silver lettering. Title page vignette. Poor quality paper uniformly browned; price clipped jacket also a bit darkened and soiled; a very good copy in a very good dust jacket.

$US25

They were said as the "pick your own journey" books. there have been a gazillion of them. i'd attempt searching on eBay for the genuine ingredient. i have not considered some thing like them at present. i imagine computer custom has replaced them indirectly.

There was no such book called simply "Vermillion"...

does it have another (or extended) title?

call your local library. tell them about the book, what you can recall, they have access to a computer data base of thousands of printings.
