Beta in the Greek alphabet is the letter B. When software is being released in beta, that means it is in a testing phase. It is not yet available for commercial sale. If you are willing to try out the software, it may still have a few bugs that need to be worked out. Usually beta software is free, for the private user, but it could be recalled at any time. Many times, you are asked to take a survey, after using a software product that has been released in beta, so the company can get feedback on there new product.
I hope this clears thing up for you, a bit anyway.

You will get all the definitions for what beta is in answers.
Basically beta is the test-software launched by large giants (Google, Yahoo, MSN). They know its not a perfect software and will have multiple nerve wrecking problems (BUGS) in it. But as the competition is severe they can't wait to perfect it and tell us users 'hey, don't sit idle and stay happy, here, this is the beta 360 or beta live mail 'msn' and now we will see how can you have peace of mind. Our peace of mind goes because all these "beta" is tested at the cost of our patience. They gather our feedback (we are never paid) and then one day when everything is fixed they say "official version is being released". Most of the times people at that time then pay to get it. The participating users like you and me are left with 'great glory' of being a participant in some human-race-saving project. But that is how things are My dear Johnson:) Things called the Betaz.

Beta is generally a pre-release version of a final software application.
If a software application goes into Beta, you should expect some problems with the software as it may have some bugs in it, so it won't be the perfect finished article.
However, all software to some degree has bugs, its near impossible to stop any errors getting in to the code.

A test for a computer product prior to commercial release. Beta testing is the last stage of testing, and normally can involve sending the product to beta test sites outside the company for real-world exposure or offering the product for a free trial download over the Internet. Beta testing is often preceded by a round of testing called alpha testing.
There are many approaches to software testing, but effective testing of complex products is essentially a process of investigation, not merely a matter of creating and following rote procedure. One definition of testing is "the process of questioning a product in order to evaluate it", where the "questions" are things the tester tries to do with the product, and the product answers with its behavior in reaction to the probing of the tester.

A pre-shipping release of hardware or software that has gone through alpha test. A beta version of software is supposed to be very close to the final product, but, in practice, it is more a way of getting users to test the software in the first place under real conditions. Given the complexity and ambiguous standards in the PC industry, it is impossible to duplicate the myriad of configurations that exist in the real world.

"Beta" is just technobable for software that hasn't been officially released yet (and therefore is not being sold) but is being made available to the public (or a select portion of the public) in order to test it. It is, in essence, the rough draft of a piece of software, submitted for the approval of a group of users that will then point out any mistakes or errors, which allows companies to release a much more bug-free product in the end.

'beta' means that the product is under 'testing' phase and still has bugs. When this product is in its final version it will no longer say beta; example:
Windows Vista Beta Release (testing)
Windows Vista (final release)
