The scythe is also seen handled by the Grim Reaper, the mythological personification of death. European folklore believes that a person sees the Grim Reaper when they die so that their soul can be "reaped", or harvested.

I'm not sure about any of this, but it seems to me that the Horseman representing death carries a broad sword similar to a scimitar. And I think that the scythe, the crooked blade on a shaft, is carried by the Horseman representing pestilence. It's been a long time since I've seen a representation of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Traditionally, death is the Grim Reaper who carries a scythe (a sickle is like a scythe except a lot smaller). He's the "reaper" (i.e. harvester) of souls so his blade is the kind used in reaping crops.
In Revelations (the last book in the Bible) however, Death is one of the four horsemen and he apparently carries a sword.

It's a scythe, a long curved blade used for harvesting wheat. The symbology here is that Thanatos (Greek for death) would reap his harvest of souls. This is also where the nickname "Grim Reaper" come from.

Death doesn't carry a blade, at least not in the Sandman comics.
Scythe, if you want the generic answer.
