It comes from "WEB LOG" meaning internet diary or record.
As English speakers tend to "blend words" while speaking
(such as: going to = gonna),
Web log soon became one word - WEBLOG
Of course - this then became further abbreviated to "Blog", in the same way that "OK" is now often just "K"

Dictionary.com actually lists blog's etymology from 1999, but no further information as to where it started, etc.

Everyone else is right about it being from the term web log.

This word 'Blog' has no etymology as such.

It is a made up word like Brunch, Sexational.

The two words, 'WEB' & 'LOG' combine to make a convenient word 'BLOG', 'B' standing for Web & 'LOG' standing for itself!

It is all word play! But it has come to stay. That's the wonder & the words appropriateness & appeal.

Blog is short for web-log, web meaning the world wide web
or internet or any computer network, and log meaning a record
such as those kept of ship journeys.

Great question I just found out what it is. Someone told me it was a contraction of web log. Where one could post web diaries and talk about anything and everything under the sun.

It comes from the original words of weB-log and now more widely known as blog:

A shared on-line journal where people can post diary entries about their personal experiences and hobbies.

It is the shortening of the term 'Weblog' after the logs kept on board ships (and starship enterprise!), the log being an account of the events of the day.

I have to agree, Blog sounds kind of abusive. Thanks for your question/ and the answers - it is not in any book that I have.
