It depends upon the University. The very best universities in the United States, like Harvard, are better than the best in the United Kingdom, although Oxford and Cambridge are also very near the top of the league of World Universities. However, in both the United States and the United Kingdom there are long tales of "also rans".

If you are thinking of studying at a UK or a US university you need to look at the acceptibility of qulaifications to employers. For instance, in my field of Occupational Psychology the UK trains professionals to Master degree level (one year postgraduate)whereas the United States expects students to take a professional doctorate (three years), which is also the level expected in many other countries. That is not atypical: in many subjects the UK offers good quality for what it gives but the Government is trying to save money on its own students by cutting the length of degrees.

If you are considering going to the UK or the US, the quality of the university should not be your only consideration. You should also consider which country will give you the better life experience.

Considering the general state of education in the UK i would say study in the US if you got the option. A lot of UK universities are just pooped up polytechnics.
