It must serve some purpose or it wouldn't happen. I think it's probably some sort of survival instinct that never gets used.

Physiologically speaking, it's part of the natural fight-or-flight reaction that is inherant in all of us. You have heightened senses and adrenaline pumps through your body, even before anything happens; basically, you become a coiled spring. And as a couple other people put it, it can either cause you to act fast and survive, or freeze and die. My hypothesis is that this differentiation determines who is more fit to survive; those who mobilize when they panic will live, and those who freeze will die. Sorry I can't give you anything definite, but this is my best guess.

umm i agree with you. see there are some people that panic too much. especially when it is not needed and then there are people that never panic. which are the best cuz they always know what to do in a tough situation. unlike the panickers(if thats even a word) they won't have a clue on what to do cuz they freak out about the tiniest things. but i think sometime don't know when but sometime there must have been a point in panicking. and if there still is well i still don't know the point. it don't make sense. I hope i helped. i confused myself. gosh you actually made me think. i hate thinking. lol

When a mother sees a child under a car, she will panic. That is when her adrenaline kicks in and at that point, she can lift the car and rescue the child. It does serve a purpose.

Adrenaline. It provides us with the "fight or flight instinct". Panic itself is not good but channeling the rush of adrenaline can be the difference between life and death.

Panic is overwhelming fear, fear can either get you moving or immobilize you. It is definitely used. it can save you or kill you. depends on the situation. When I am frightened for example I am in motion! and fast too. scaring me has long been out of the question for pranksters if they know me and have scared me once already I don't just jump around.. I am coming to get you. However my sister she gets scared stiff- I have saved her many times because of fear in the same situation- she is stiff as a board and easy to carry I am moving fast and super strong... go figure.
