My mom used to work in the welfare office, on the solo mom division. She'd come home screaming laughing over some of the names these people gave the kids ( keep in mind this was the 80s)....they had a Mogwai, an Ewok, Marijuana, Cocaine....once she had a mother with the last name of "lennon" come in and register her new son John....mom by this point got the giggles and said " oh is ringo starr with you too?!" and ended up under her desk crying laughing.
I also went to school with a boy called Phillip McCraken. shortened to Phil....i kid you not.

I haven't had any personal experience with strange names... thankfully, but on these boards, when people ask what other people think about names, I cringe with embarrassment!
I prefer classic names and names that don't really age. I also prefer class-less names, when I named my son... Oliver, I figured, a brain surgeon called be called Oliver and so could someone who lays bricks, it really did work across all classes.
Unfortunately he's saddled with Arthur as a middle name, but its a family name, so I'll let that one pass!
I'm pregnant with my second baby, a girl, and we will probably call her Elizabeth Kathryn - again, could be a lawyer, could be a shop assistant!!!
I happen to think Apple is quite a pretty name for a little girl, but not for a grown woman!

My mom once met a guy (keep in mind that this is a burly black man) named Precious. Honestly, that name would be bad enough for a girl, but for a GUY? Also, there was a lady who had twins named Gonorrhea and Syphilis. She had apparently heard the words and thought they were pretty, but she didn't know what they meant. I also know of a woman named Vendetta and another named Debris. Oh, and apparently there's someone out there named Adam Zapple.

Ok. I know this'll sound silly, but my wife is a substitute teacher, so she's heard the whiole lot...and by far the funniest she's told me about were 2 twin boys... Lemonjelo and Orangelo (pronounced almost like they're french) But, basically spelled like Lemon Jello and Orange Jello!!!!!!!!! (minus a couple letters)

I have a BUNCH of weird names for ya!
I knew a girl named Candy Graham (no fooling!) Her mother joked that she almost named Candy's brother "Tele"....
One day when I was working at a grocery store, I had the pleasure of checking the ID of Colgate Palmolive Smith! (she said "Call me Olive") hehe
And my grandma's neighbor was Grinnell Smith (I think they were overcompensating for a common last name!) Even funnier his wife called him "Mouse"....dunno why!
Then I also heard from someone who worked in a hospital....who happened to be named Loma Linda Jones.....that someone had named their kids Lemonjello and Orangejello.....might have been an urban legend......

At the risk of sounding racist, black people tend to have extraordinarily odd names for their children.
Pushanta, LaQuanda, Precious, DeMetriala, Shaneequa and LaShavontelle are actual names of people I went to grade school with.
I also think it's odd to take normal names and screw with them. I worked with a black woman named Dadana (Dana with an extra Da in the front), and recently my girlfriend was at the store and was engaged in conversation with a black lady who asked the name of our son. When told it was Adam, she replied "Oh I love that name! I'm pregnant now with a boy and I'm gonna name him Ja'Adam!"
Very strange if you ask me.
Also, Jermaine Jackson named his son JerMajesty.
Oh yeah.

When my oldest daughter was born (she's 16 now) we went to our WIC appointment and the ladies there were talking about another client who had named her son "Ponyboy" (like from The Outsiders). I thought they were kidding until I saw it in the newspaper under the Birth Announcements!
