Never start a sentence with "but".
Drop the words "in defense". I don't like it. I could go into why, but then we would have to discuss the context of this paper. Just leave it off.
Passing a few modules hardly gives you a "geography background". A graduate degree and a few years of fieldwork, however, would solidly qualify as a "background" in geography.
I don't know who your target audience is or what the purpose this writing is for. I am assuming you are writing an essay to gain entrance into a program of study, and the reader will be a P.h.D. with extensive experience.
I am curious about the context of this sentence.
