Definitely, in the moviehouses. I like how I can see the movie in a bigger perspective. I can appreciate the special effects the most that way. For truly a great movie watching experience, it can only be had at the moviehouses. :)

I'd have to say I prefer watching movies at home using my DVD player. While I agree with doobydo about the big screen experience being hugely important (especially for particularly visual films like the LOTR trilogy, the Star Wars dual trilogies, etc.), the cinema can also provide far too many distractions.

My friend doobydo mentioned the most obvious (and annoying) one: people talking during the film. This can all but ruin the cinematic experience and otherwise prove extremely vexing. I'm also annoyed by the apparent need of so many people to stuff their faces with food and drink during a film. I have never understood that. When I go to see a film, I tend to be engrossed in the subject matter and feel no need to gorge myself on snacks.

As to how I prefer the conditions at home when I'm watching DVD versions of movies, I am definitely of the lights-out school. It must be at least as dark as in a cinema and, yes, I would prefer it if no one talked during the film. Frankly, one of the most enjoyable aspects of watching movies as a social function is discussing the just-seen film with friends afterward over a cup of tea, coffee or a favourite libation. Is it really that difficult to be considerate of others and wait until AFTER the movie to talk about it? I don't think so.

I love to go to the cinema. Nothing compares with seeing a movie on the big screen.

Also, I like to watch the movie in complete silence. I don't want to hear anyone talking and that includes the friend who is with me, who wants to comment on the movie.

I want to get lost in the movie - I want to disappear into the world of the movie and I can't succeed in doing that, if people keep reminding of their existence in an annoying way. Yes, it's old-fashioned escapism for me.
