Bud,
Your question is not phased right. In the 80's the whole muscle car thing was dead and gone. Anything in the 74-78 era had crap compression which = horrible performance, plus EGR, AIR pumps, Cats, and more and more gov. crap where bolted onto these cars. The true honest muscle car era is from 1964 to about 1973/74.
1964 Started it all with the Ford Mustang setting the ball in motion, but the Poncho's had thier little GTO out there. Chevy, got into the pony car thing in 67 with the Camaro, and Mopar with there bright flashy colors(1968), on the road runners, Cuda's, GTX's, Superbirds and such.
Now alot of people are listing cars that were tuners, and never rolled right off the Factory assembly line. Your questions refers to "the best" meaning 0-60?, 60-0, 1/4 mile times?, top speed? h/p numbers?
If thats the kind of info you are looking for I'd have to vote for the Shelby Cobra. lighter, smaller, then any of the cars people listed above, better power to weight ratio then above, big block Ford power, and a raw feel to it.
Second choice would be the Buick GSX of 1970. 455ci motor that was the torque king of its day.
Enjoy

Pontiac with any engine thats 389 to 455 between years 1960 to 1979.
All Pontiac engines after 1979 were chevys or Olds engines. Unless you have the 301 V8 POS.
