I just watched this movie for the first time (I'm 20) and I don't quite understand what he means when he says "Here's looking at you, kid". (I think that's what he says). And since he says it multiple times in the movie, I really think I need to have a better understanding of the meaning.

It's a toast he uses with her...just like saying, "Here's to you," but with more of a loving tone. The "kid" part is meant to be sweet more than condescending.

The reason it means so much in the end is because he's saying it to her one last time.

It is Rick speak fo "I love you." Three words you will never hear him speak because he is such a tough guy. Think Jack Nicholson in "Terms of Endearment" when he tells Shirley Mac Claine "I love you too." The tone is the same.

Dont you have anything you say often that people remember about you?

For example,
Remember when everyone said "Whatever" in the 90's?

It's quite simply a compliment & term of endearment, like "You're looking good".

Normally when you say that to someone, you only let them know that you like looking after them or that you have special interest on that person. Nothing more, nothing less. :)

It's just Rick's way of expressing his affection for Ilsa.
