Stereotype can be defined as an oversimplified image or type, in this case of a group of people, for example, Italians shout a lot, or Hispanics are religious people. Stereotypes are partially true most of the time, people don't just make up stuff. The problem lies in the wrong usage of stereotypes, when people start thinking that that is how everyone in that particular culture, country, group of people, etc , is. This is obviously wrong because in the millions of individuals of any culture or ethinicity you'll find everything and anything. The usage of stereotypes is good when used correctly , that is if you're not ignorant (hypothetically speaking). Also the stereotypes will vary throughout the world, so what Americans think of Russians is going to be very different than what Indians think, etc. If you're proud of yourself and your culture and think that the stereotype that your people have isn't off, then I guess you should just be proud of what you are.

Youza angry black man, aintcha?
Seriously though, there’s nothing wrong with it until you start making an issue of it. I see this more with the black race than any other; but you (and I mean you in the editorial sense) tend to stereotype yourselves. I’m not saying that you should conform or that you shouldn’t be who you were born to be. But in society you are treated in the manner which you present yourself. Anyone (Black, White, Asian, Indian, etc..) who dresses slovenly will be treated as such. Anyone who does not communicate using proper grammar will be treated as a person of lesser intelligence. Anyone who treats those around them with disrespect will not receive respect.
I know what you’re probably thinking, “Easy for you to say white boy”. Well take another look, I have hair down to my waist, and there are those who will judge me because it isn’t a socially acceptable look. Those (men) with long hair tend to be unkempt, rednecks, slackers, or just someone of lesser intelligence. However, I am well educated, well groomed, well spoken, and I dress respectably in public. Sure, I could cut it and be just like any other white guy out there, but I won’t because it’s every bit as much a part of me as your black heritage is to you. However, I never make an issue of my difference. I never accuse people of bias based on my appearance. I simply conduct myself in a manner which overrides social stereotypes.

You just did.
Stereotypes are considered to be a group concept, held by one social group about another. But you prove that you can have a concept about yourself too that is a stereotype.
Nothing wrong with it...as long as you don't think that a stereotype IS that group. At least I hope you are about more than just hip hop and watermelon?

its not just black people who enjoy those things. they enjoy those things maybe just as much as the next white people, lol...there are those stereotypical things...i think you should live however makes you happy. white black tan green we are all human and have been given a life to live.so darn it, live it. marry who you want and make babies and eat watermelon...im white, i love watermelon by the way. i like soul food too it makes my soul sleepy, makes me want to go to bed lol.
a stereotype is something thats assumed with a race. white folks are associated with, say, four wheeling and nascar. black folks, fried chicken and eccentric names, mexicans, having a lot of kids and having jobs as dishwashers, arabs, having weapons of mass destruction.. ive seen some true, yeah, but ive seen mexicans who love nascar. ive seen white people like me who like watermelon. I say we all just chill and take a break from this racism....forever.
***have you ever thought about how people are actually conditioned to like certain things? I like rap myself..if you actually listen to the words, the words tell you how you are sposed to think...how do you think kids get to hating cops? its in the music...and in country music, they talk about country girls' asses and four wheeling etc... its complete conditioning...we're told what we are supposed to like if we are a certain race.... theres a very good book you should pick up while youre out....its called 'brave new world' i love that book. it explains a lot of the bullshit that goes on nowadays.
meanwhile have no shame in your favorite foods and music tastes! Just live as fully as you can while youre here!

A stereotype is a broad often inaccurate description of a group by people who are ignorant of that group. It does not take into account or allow for individualism within that group and is often, though not necessarily, negative.

The best way to end the stereotype is to do all of the things you described, but be extremely successful as well.

Well you just said something yourself that was quite stereotypical! You asked what's wrong with being "black",well, what is "being black",how do you think one is supposed to act if they are "black"?Perhaps you should check yourself before getting flustered with your friends...after all,you are who you hang with.
