I would say that anyone who is seriously considering suicide has such problems that there impulses have little to do with selfishness and more to do with their own feeling of lack of control.
If your life is so unpleasant for you that you are looking to commit suicide then you need more help then any of the people whom your death might affect.
The only time I considered suicided was when I got trapped in a canyon on an outrageous backpacking trip. I thought I was going to die anyway, and the pain was so bad that I thought it was better to expedite the process.
If I had committed suicide then I wouldn't have been rescued.
What I should have understood, which I now understand is this.
If I was going to die anyway, then that is just the point. I was going to die anyway, so there was no reason to expedite the matter. There was always that slim hope of being rescued. So I might as well hang on until I am dead, just to see if somewhere in between there something good doesn't happen.
The thing was, I had to understand that help wasn't going to come from me. That was why I was so desparate, because I had no way of saving myself.
If you are so desparate that you want to commit suicide, then you have reached a point such as I had reached in that canyon. You no longer have any hope in yourself. The only chance of life must come from somewhere else.
As much as some people may recoil from the idea, I seriously suggest that you start wrestling with what you believe about men, eternity, life, and the notion of God.
You are going to die someday anyway, and we know for a fact that no man can conquer death, so you might start searching for God.

people that commit suicide now a days really have no reason to but it is also a fad in other times of history it was more honorable to kill their self than by their ememies just read the stories of the times
so is it selfish i don't know and don't care but i think it takes a weak person to do it in these time and look how easy life is now come on humans used not live past 30 and lived a hard life with no comforts we have now

I don't think suicide is selfish at all. It is one of the few real choices a person has. It is more selfish to have a baby than commit suicide, simply because you are bringing a person into an insane world without consulting them. It takes a desperate, insane, or extremely brave person to commit suicide. I know I don't have the nerve to do it.

maybe calling it selfish is a little bit... well, selfish of other people. but i do think it's always a waste. the state of mind that leads to suicide (and we've all been there, some more than others) is a lie.. a denial of all the possibilities. there are a million approaches one can take.. you can quit your job, leave the country, start a movement, join a movement, give, take, create, be bold, tell people what you really think, tell them how you were going to kill yourself but you changed your mind so now they should listen to you... the possibilities are endless

It is selfish because it is something one does to or for him/herself. It is also your right. Since you own yourself you have the right of disposition. Yes, I have considered suicide. While answering this question or any question about suicide, everyone considers it and makes a decision of whether it is an option for him/herself.

Suicide is selfish. It all comes from wallowing in self-pity. It's pathetic and cowardly.

I believe that if it's "attempted"suicide,it is a desperate cry for help and VERY selfish. If it is an actual suicide,I believe it's a result of deep, repressed depression and perhaps anger.
