If you find large 4-door sedans with two gentlemen in sunglasses and Mens Wearhouse suits following your car on a daily basis, you might be stalking your ex.
If you spend more than 2 hours per night, planning your surveillance routine for the next day - you might be stalking your ex.
If you've conned someone at the telephone company to be your 'special friend', in order to learn the calling patterns of that special 'ex', you might be stalking your ex.

Interesting.
If you're stalking your ex, a part of you may know already that you are but you are ignoring it. Your bruised ego or a need to control what you can't control makes you push yourself to waste your time watching where your ex goes, monitoring their emails if you have access, or asking around to mutual friends. Chatting up their family asking them questions, that kind of thing. Or camping outside your window and calling several times a day.
You could ask the police what they term as stalking and take it from there.

If you have erotomania and all the symptoms. If you are the guy who hangs out beside this lovely girl's condo at the end of the next street most nights between 9:30 and 11:00 p.m. If you see me or anyone else who goes for walks in the evenings and end up driving away out of fear that someone will catch you. When you see someone familiar walking along, you start stalking later on or turning around at the sight of them. It is so obvious. She no longer sits out and sings folk songs, plays with her dog or has barbecues. They sit inside with the curtains nearly drawn and watch movies.

If you're dropping in without being invited, calling repeatedly, sending notes..........after all, this is your "ex" and you have no reason to be doing these things.
If your ex tells you not to call or come over that's another sign that you're stalking.
Be careful - it is possible to get yourself a jail sentence if you don't get a grip on yourself.

If you have to ask you may very well be. If you are following his/her life to the point where it interferes with your ability to move on...you are stalking.

3. you send more than 5 random messages to them daily
