Rooney and I are still friends: Ronaldo

LISBON (AFP) - Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo has said there is no hostility between him and his Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney despite accusations that he helped get the England striker sent off during the World Cup quarter-finals.
"I would like to make it clear that there is no problem at all between me and Rooney. I insist: no problem at all," he told the Oporto-based Gestifute agency which represents him, on Monday.
"At the end of the game, we exchanged a series of text messages just as we had on the day before. Between the two of us, everything is clear," he added.
"In fact, he didn't just send me congratulations for going forward in the World Cup, he also told me we have a great team, and if we carry on as we have, we will go far."
During the second half of Saturday's match Ronaldo appeared to encourage Argentine referee Horacio Elizondo to demand a card for Rooney after the England star stamped on Chelsea's Portuguese defender Ricardo Carvalho.
Rooney was sent off in the 62nd minute and England went on to lose 3-1 on penalties, including the decisive one scored by Ronaldo.
English media have reported that Rooney is furious at Ronaldo for trying to influence the referee and has vowed never to play with the Portuguese striker again. Ronaldo denies any role in Rooney's eviction.
"I am not the referee with the power to send off anyone I want, nor do I have the ability to convince him to show cards," he said.
"The referee produced the red card because he thought that he had to, and my participation in that was absolutely zero."
Ronaldo added Rooney had told him to ignore the reports in the English press as they were not true.
"Statements have appeared as if they were from him, saying that he didnt want to play with me in Manchester. Thats not what he wants. Of course he wants to. This is absolutely false, he said so himself when asked," he said.

Although Rooney and Ronaldo are team mates, it doesn't automatically mean that they are friends. They are both very passionate players and this can only be increased when playing for your country in a competition that only comes around once every four years. However, I thought that Ronaldo was out of order, running up to the Ref the way he did and getting involved in something that had nothing to do with him. I don't think Rooney had stamped on the other player, he was trying to keep his balance whilst someone wrapped their legs around his. The Ref saw it much more clearly than anyone else and I really don't think he would have even booked Rooney for the incident (no matter what he has said since). The incident cost England any chance of scoring and so from a Portuguese point of view the incident was a success, but I don't think it did a lot for the beautiful game.

WATCH the footage. If anything, it was the other way around with Rooney hating Ronaldo. English fans should realize that in the WC, Ronaldo currently plays for PORTUGAL, which means he wants his team to win. He didn't act as if he hated Rooney, but he was just talking to the ref to say that it was a blatant foul, which it was because Rooney stepped on a guy's balls. Ronaldo spoke for less than 5 seconds and Rooney lost his temper and pushed him, hence drawing the red card. English fans should just stop whining and get over it. They are good friends, but even friends have to compete against each other. Ronaldo didn't do anything "not good" by pointing out a foul and it is Rooney's own fault for not controlling his actions.

Well playing for your National Team is one thing and playing for your club is an other. I think they were both tensed during the game, although I think it was Rooney who overreacted.
The thing is, as the both play at the same position, there could be a thing between them that existed even before the world cup. Kind or rivalry...But they are both professionals and are expected to act as professionals, which means co operate for the benefit of Manchester United.

No man, Ronaldo action was right, look at Rooney how he foul and bear in mind this was not a club match, it is a World Cup Knockout match and there was two nations, two countries were against each other so Ronaldo action was right he should act to get maximum advantage against the rival team. I think the action or reaction was right.

Obviously these two guys are playing for their COUNTRY...It's only natural that they get a little defensive...And CORRECTION, it was ROONEY who was a little aggressive with RONALDO, and not the other way around...If you watched that match more clearly, you would have noticed how Ronaldo approached Rooney, but as he put his hand on his shoulder, Rooney shrugged it off, and pushed him...

"Football is war" -Rinus Michels. I think it won't change anything. They are mature men, will get over it. There are also rumours (take this lightly) that Ronaldo may play for Real Madrid.

They're professionals. If they play in one team, they will find a way to support each other. It's all a matter of common interests.
