Some online community sites don't fail. The backbone of a community site is a good community. If you can do real life work, like talking to people in person and promoting the community in real life, you can maintain the community website. It can thrive if it really improves peoples lives and it is interesting and motivating enough for people to return everyday. Some sites are just not engaging enough, some are too engaging (cultish), and some are engaging but there are too many distractions like advertisements or bad design. All of these features are important but the key is a good community.

They fail because they are not filtered enough to keep predators and idiotic people off of the sites.Another reason they fail is because even though the sites aren't filtered very well, the parents are not doing a good enough job of watching their children while they are using/viewing these sites.The sites fail because they recieve so much negative feedback from the media and parental complains which leads to downfall short after.The parents should have no right to complain on the issues if they would monitor their children better, and if they did there would be no problems.Which would leave the online communities safe and media harm free.End of story.

people r opportunists and tend to get bored easily therefore if they spend time on one thing but something much more interesting comes along chances are there going to either go with something new or follow what every one else is doing. i know i had a xanga and i absolutely refused to follow every one else to myspace until eventually every one had shut down there xangas and no one was leaving me any more comments! so then i of course i gave in.
