How exactly do the trains work with a Eurail Pass? Do I need to obtain a ticket or does my Eurail pass serve as my ticket? Are there extra charges on overnight trains? Food cost on the trains?

Am I going to be able to get an overnight ticket from Rome to Venice the day I need it or do I need to reserve a ticket now? Thanks for your help travelers!

Sometimes you do need to reserve--especially in Germany--and there's a small fee for that. Without a reservation you'll be allowed on the train but you won't necessarily get a seat. There may be a supplement for fast trains as well, and certainly for sleeping compartments (much less than a hotel room though).

I'm not sure you'd want an overnight train from Rome to Venice--the direct train is less than five hours and I didn't find a direct overnight one (I admit I looked in the wrong place), so you'd be looking at leaving Rome at quarter to one and switching trains in Bologna at 6.

We had the flexi-pass (is that what it's called?) so we did mostly long trips, with criss-crossing. have fun!

Some countries arent included in Eurail. Like Croatia. Rome and Venice are about 3 hours apart, no need for an overnight. Theyre always available in the ticket booth at the station.
