If you don't care enough about yourself to not smoke, after all the studies they have done stating the harm it does, why should the government do anything? We are not a Communist state, the party is not responsible for you being stupid. Tobacco generates a lot of money, which generates a huge amount of taxes. The tobacco companies got in a lot of trouble a few years back, not for selling cigarettes, but for marketing to teenagers and for adding things, (nasty nasty things) to the tobacco.

Everything can be bad for you, if you take too much. The responsibility to not smoke lies in the consumer not in the government.

The government is responsible for controlling items that are illegal, not harm full. A big mack is harm full, chili cheese fries are harm full. I guess the real problem is too many people need a keeper, and not having one, ***** at the government for not making sure they don't do stupid ****.

Ya, sounds stupid to me too.

You have to go back to the end of the Civil War.

After the mass destruction due to the war, the Government needed a Cash Crop to help the South begin producing again and have an economy.

Tobacco is a weed, and like all weeds, it grows quickly with little work. You can grow two crops a year in the South.

And, like everyone else wrote, it's one of the few legal taxable products.

Taxable products are: Tobacco, Alcohol, Imports, Exports, Profits and Gambling winnings.

Wages are not legally taxable.

Because our society is formed based on money, money is the basic need for human, and some people want to earn this money from any way, even the life cost of human. The important thing is that the rolling of money is big importance to drive the system. the cigarettes and other related materials play a big roll to smooth rolling of this system.
so how government loose this option. the solution is people, they can control.

because it means billions of dollars for them
is that reason enough.

what ever gave you the idea that the government is concerned about you health
it is more likely the other way round
the secret agenda of ,Bush,Kissinger and Prince Philip is to reduce the world population by 60% ,not to save it.

needs some pretty heavy duty killing to archieve all that
death from sigarettes is but a small step in that direction
better worry about what their modis operandi is gonna be.

why does the government have to get its nose into everyone's business?
i say let us be. the government shouldnt stop cigarette companies. the only reason they are still around is because people choose to buy them.
it should be peoples' choice how to live, not the government's

Smoking is conscious decision. If you choose to smoke then you deserve what u get. If you choose to hang out with people who smoke and you inhale second hand smoke then you get what you deserve. Why should the gvm't be involved ? You want MORE laws?

the government is not the answer it's the problem.

The gov. doesn't want to stop them, do you realise how much taxes the gov. gets from cigs.? Other taxes would sky rocket if the gov. got no revenue from cigs. however they have to make it look like they are doing the right thing for the community by banning smoking in public places etc. goes for alcohol too.

becasue the cigarette companies are privately based and the government has no business involving itself. Its called personal responsibility,. if you don't like smoking, then don't smoke!
