Austin's genuine rise to super stardom began on June 23, 1996, when he won the WWF's annual King of the Ring single-elimination tournament on PPV. After toppling Marc Mero in the semi-finals, he defeated Jake "The Snake" Roberts in the final, who was then incorporating a moral, Christian message in his gimmick. After the match, Austin cut a promo during his coronation which viciously mocked Jake's reformed lifestyle, telling Roberts:
"You sit there and you thump your Bible, and you say your prayers, and it didn't get you anywhere! Talk about your Psalms, talk about John 3:16... Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ***!"
Austin 3:16 ultimately became one of the most popular catchphrases in wrestling history. Austin would later turn face, as spontaneous fan support for him grew larger by the week.

You can tell the age of the people who are asking the questions. This person hasn't been watching wrestling too long.
If you don't want to read the entire article that Tsurg posted, this is what happen.
It was during the '96 King of the Ring tourney. Old ***, Jake the Snake Roberts, through the hand of God or fate or whatever made it to the finals. He beat Vader. Stone Cold, with a bloody lip beat Marc Mero. Jake Roberts was doing this whole born again Christian angle, and Austin whooped his ***, and won the match. During the corronation to crown him King, he talked about Jake saying his pslams, and John 3:16s, and where all that got him. and then he blurted out his famous line, which would sell millions and millions of T-Shirts.

It depends on which context you mean. It is a bible verse John 3:16 which talks about God loving the world so much that he willingly let Jesus die on the cross for the sins of man to be washed clean. Stone Cold used it once to counteract a point made by some wrestler in which Stone Cold said "you talk about John 3:16..well Austin 3:16 says "I just whooped your a**.""

in John 3:16 of the Bible it says "For God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life." I think it's a twist on the Bible verse that Steve Austin is doing...just my thoughts, don't know for sure.
