Are you asking, in what types of circumstances do people use prediction?

Like weather forcasters predicting rain..?

Or election polls trying to predict the winning candidates?

Or wall street traders trying to predict the next successful companies?

Or a genetic counselor predicting if a couple might produce a child with a birth defect?>

I am not sure what you are fishing for. People use prediction every day. I just made a prediction that I could make it home on the gasoline left in my tank. My low fuel light was on, but based on the miles I had left, and the mileage of my car, I made a prediction that I would make it home without refueling.

Nasa predicted where saturn would be in space before they sent the cassini probe to take pictures of it.

The lunch lady at school has to predict how many children might eat school lunch on a given day. If she knows, based on years of experience, that on "meat loaf" day most of the kids usually bring a lunch box, but on pizza day most of the kids want a hot school lunch, then she makes alot more food than usual on pizza day

Prediction is used all the time, isn't it?

There is a difference in the certainty of predictions. Some predictions are almost certain and others seem to be merely guesses.

Predicting when there will be a full moon seems rather certain. Predicting the tides, rather certain. Predicting the weather five days from now, a little fuzzy. Predicting what your mother in law would like for her birthday present? useless...

Maybe there are only two types of predictions

right and wrong

Two kinds of predicting are those that predict on their own and those who have help. The first kind are the guessers, some better than others, but there is nothing mystical or supernatural at all about them. This is true of weathermen and watchers of horse races, fake mediums and fancy manipulators. The other kind have spiritual help--some from God, and many from God's enemy, Satan. God's predictions always come true and promote a greater sense of obedience and sincerety toward Him. Other predictions may come true, but bring with them fear, abandon, or morbid hopelessness. I believe there are people gifted by God today that make true predictions in His name, but I believe that a great majority, both in and out of the church, are either self serving or demonically driven.
PS I won't try and predict whether or not my answer will be your first choice. : - )
