You can take the Greyhound bus. To make the trip more comfortable take something non perishable to eat and lots of bottled water. When I travelled greyhound from B.C. to Nova Scotia last year there was no running water on the buses. The bus driver said it was because people were drinking it. We had to use bottled water to wash with and brush teeth, etc. I found it was cheaper to buy a 7 day discover Canada Pass. You have 7 days travel and can get off in different towns, etc. and catch the bus to go further at your convenience. It's the cheapest way to travel but having done a lot of travel I can tell you the service leaves a lot to be desired.
You can also take the train but it is expensive. It is definitely a great way to go if you can afford it. There is a bar car, dining car and domed car and you also get a berth with a bed, private toilet, etc. You can catch both in Calgary which will take you to Toronto. Note: You get your fare cheaper for either by booking 7 days in advance. My suggestion would be to take the train for the most pleasant trip. Booking through a travel agent is recommended because they can often find you the best prices for the time you want to travel. Good luck.

There is no direct train from Calgary. You would have to go to Edmonton, Jasper or some other place first.
Bus is definetely possible if that what you want. A flight would be a more comfortable option and not much more expensive especially if you consider that the "time is money".

Travel distance (shortest route) through US is 3485 km. Canada only (around the north side of the lakes) is 3423 km. This means you'd need to be getting about 1140 - 1160 km per tank. A 2005 Toyota has a tank size of approximately 45 litres. Doing the math, you'd have to have a fuel efficiency of about 3.95 litres per 100 km (which in old imperial units is about 71 mpg, based on a Canadian gallon). More typical fuel efficiencies for 2005 Toyota is about 11 litres per 100 km ... about 25.5 mpg. This means you'd need approximately 8.5 tanks of fuel to make the trip.
