I think the correct question is "Why do some cultures/societies worry about skin color"?

It depends on how you look at the question. If it about racial then coz some idiots out there are just whack.

But if you are looking from a health point of view, your skin can generally tell you when all its not well in your body. A slight change in your skin colour or even texture is a way of the body to communicate to us that there is an underlying problem that need urgent attention before it becomes serious. In this case, I do worry when my skin colour changes and its a way of telling me I need a check up. Ciao

There's a culture thing involved in it too. Asians, I believe, prefer to be lighter colored. Americans believe in the "healthy tan". I suppose darker skin also means you spend more time in the sun and therefore increases your chances for skin cancer.

Colors are there to warn us.

Yellow means you've been drinking too much

Red means you've been at the beach too long

And black and blue means you slept with your buddies girlfriend and got caught, lol.

Probably because society has dictated that a tanned body is more attractive to the opposite sex.

It's not just us.
Even animals like others that look more like them.
All physical characteristics are taken into account when mating.

I like the answer below as well.

My friend, who is black, asked me when we first met, "why do white women worry about getting great dark tans, when black women, blacks in general are still treated bad." I really had no answer for that.
