you need to run the network setup wizard on all the machines, and set up the folders you want shared. best way is to run it on the main computer, when it askes to make a disk say yes, save it to a floppy or flash drive, and then run the setup disk on all the other computers

You don't have to do the disks. They can help, but sometimes it doesn't.
You need to make sure that all the computers are in the same work group. Open the System Properties box (the Windows Key + Pause/Break key will open this box) and go to Computer Name Tab. In that tab, click Change. When that window opens, click the Workgroup Radio button (if it isn't already done) and name the Workgroup. The Default is MSHOME, which is dangerous if you are using remote access. Make sure ALL the computers in your Network have the same exact name in the Workgroup. The Computer name can be any name you want, but ALL the computers in the network has to have different Computer Names. Restart the PC's and you should have connection.
You shouldn't need Domain name unless you do have a central server.
Follow the rest of the other advise in making sure you have the folders you like to share with the computers in your Network in Share mode. Make sure you DO NOT give permissions to have files changed from remote computers. If someone outside of your home gets access of your computer remotely, they can make the same changes.

Using Windows XP or 2000;
Computers connected through a router or switch need to be either joined to your network's domain or to a common workgroup.
Most likely, your network doesn't have a domain, so you need to ensure that all computers are joined to the common workgroup.
On each computer, log on as the Administrator and perform the following:
1. Go to the Control Panel (Start->Control Panel; or Start-> Settings -> Control Panel)
2. Open the "System" Control Panel console (double click on "System". you may need to click "Switch to Classic View" on the left sidebar).
3. Click the "Computer Name" or "Network Identification" tab.
4.Click the "Change" button
5. Select the "Workgroup" option.
6. Type a name for your workgroup. Note: the name must be EXACTLY the same for each computer and may not contain spaces. Example: MYGROUP)
7. Click OK in each window to save the change.
8. Restart the computer.
After completing this for each computer you should be able to see the computers in the "Network Neighborhood" or "My Network Places" windows. Note: you may need to click "View Workgroup Computers" in the left sidebar to see them.
