Our anchor got stuck and we had to cut it. We spent about an hour achored to watch fireworks and then spent another hour trying to pull anchor. We have a 454 engine so no problem on the power end but you could hear the cleats coming out of their screws. We've gotten stuck on another anchor before and gotten it up. What the hell did we get stuck on???

We tried every direction, still didn't pull up a bit.

It could be a sunken boat, a reef, rocks, logs, old dock, car, bridge. underwater cable or pipe etc.
All you can do is pull at it from another angle,
Try the opposite direction from what you were anchored at.

What you got stuck on depends on the type of anchor because they all have a bottom type they don't like.

Your mistake was backing down hard against a stuck anchor... I'd guess this is a power boat... The next time you anchor in that area, tie a trip line to the back side of the anchor and attach the other end to a float. if the anchor won't come out, go over to the trip line and pull the anchor out.

The other thing is, the next time you pull the anchor, just attach the end of the rhode to a cleat and keep taking the slack out as the boat moves up and down... works real well and usually will get it out.

It could have been a rock or a wreck. There are a couple of things one can do before you get to cut your anchor. At the very least put a buoy and come back latter to pick it up. Bad Carma to leave anchors behind

It was a BIG Fish, and you let him get away! :-(
captmhunt has you a good idea with the Trip Line. Not matter much what you were hung on, the main thing is having a way to Release the Anchor when it does get stuck.

I knew someone who got hung on an old car some one had dumped in the lake.If it was a man made lake there could be lots of things left down there.
