We took it to a mechanic because we need to sell it and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It seems like it's going to die, but usually doesn't. It has a few times, but just starts right back up when I turn it back on. I said surging in the title, but it's more like the opposite of surging - I'm not sure what to call it, but it's like it's going to die. We are stumped and need to sell it. Anyone had a similar problem???

Is it a stick shift? Maybe you need a new clutch.

Try searching for "Dodge Neon forums", I know you will find the answer there. A while back I found all the answers to Neon problems for a friends car that had various issues.

Could also be the torque converter clutch not releasing properly (automatic trans). When this happens, it feels like a manual transmission would feel if you were to slow down without depressing the cluch. It would lug and then stall, but start up no problem !!!

There are many possible reasons for what I believe you're trying to say, stalling or hesistation.

The most common reason for hesistation and stalling is a clogged fuel filter, dirty fuel injector or bad fuel pump.

I would recommend replacing the fuel filter and try pouring a few bottles of fuel injector cleaner down the gas tank first to see if there is any improvement. If there isn't please feel free to contact me via e-mail by clicking on my name to the left.

It could be a mass air flow sensor. also dodge neon's don't have fuel filters that can be replaced without replacing the pump they are attached permanently.
