I personally think that the dogs that are afraid of fireworks all have thier own reasons for being scared of them for example I have 2 dogs one of them is not afraid of anything she doesnt care about thunder or fireworks loud noises dont phase her at all so if the theory about loud noises just hurt thier ears doesnt seem plausible in her case since she doesnt even bother waking up when someone shoots off those loud fireworks. She is the kind of dog that doesnt even get up to check out something new and usually isnt very curious..my other dog however is terrified of them and thunder and he starts shaking and panting and hides under my feet but he is a much more inquisitive and sensitive dog who I think is afraid of these things simply because he doesnt know what they are and since I cant explain it to him he simply fears it because it is the unknown. I am positive this is the case since he also wont go in the basement which as far as I can tell is only because he doesnt know what awaits him down there....since he will go up or down any other stairs he encounters as long as he can see up or down them. Oh yeah and for some reason when I took him on a ferry they blow that really loud horn which deafens even me, the same dog who cowers in fear of fireworks didnt even flinch but he did however immediately locate the loud speaker which the sound was coming from and seemed satisfied with that. So there are many reasons why dogs fear loud noises but I personally think it is because to them it is the unknown...

Dogs scared of fireworks because,
The ears of dogs are so much sensitive i.e they can hear little sound too.
That's why the sound of fireworks is too much for them.Due to which they get frightened.

According to wikipedia: Dogs can identify sound's location much faster than humans can, as well as hear sounds up to four times the distance than humans are able to.
To be able to hear sounds that far, i think dogs hearings have some kinda of ability to magnify the projected sound within the hear drums or they have extremely sensitive hear drums. Hence louds sounds produced by fireworks could be of very high dB for their ears.

I think dogs (K-9s) might be afraid of fireworks (firecrackers) because of the pitch (frequency) or something of that sort (kind).

mmy dog aint scared of no fireworks. we just went out there like an hour ago and shot some off. we had to chase him down! he tries to eat them. we shoot off cannonballs and stands like 1 foot in front of them. i do sparklers and he jumps up at me and trys to eat the sparks well i guess its jusdt certain dogs and my dog will eat anything. he eats screws, barbie dolls, stuffed animals, his own vomit, grass ,and he goes out into the woods in our backyard and catches turtles and he comes back home with only a turtle shell in his mouth. he is so nasty. oh yea. i also think that the sound is so high it hurts their ears

Due to K-9 highly accute sense of hearing, any occurance of loud and rapid eruption's can disorient the animal and disturb their sense of perception. Hence their tendancy to 'hide' from the noise as an attempt to buffer their sense from possible damage.

It hurts their ears.
They don't know what it is.
They might confuse it with thunder meaning a storm is coming.
They may have experienced gun fire and not liked it - similar sound.
