Irritable bowel syndrome is caused by autoimmune attack of the gut, mediated by IgE antibodies. If you don't want to take Zelnorm, there is a very effective but somewhat nasty remedy. IgE antibodies are part of our immune system and are made for the sole purpose of attacking intestinal worms (helminths). In our clean and sanitary lives now noone has worms so the IgE's don't have anything to do and they often attack the gut tissue instead, causing your symptoms. So you can get an intestinal parasite and your symptoms would clear up! Inhaling fragrances into your lungs will have no effect what so ever as the two areas are not directly linked.

I disagree. Irritable bowel syndrome is often found in people, mainly women, who are high strung. It is impossible to separate the mind from the body and emotions can cause the elevated responses of the gut. Aromatherapy is probably a great way to simply take time to indulge and relax. Better yet try it in a hot tub or other relaxing medium and see if it has a positive effect. It certainly cannot hurt.

You should increase your water intake to half your body weight in ounces. Ex: 200lbs = 100 ounces a day. It is a lot but do your best and you should start feeling some relief. If you can get an alkaline, oxygenated water that will be better. There are a couple brands you'll find in the health food stores called Smart water or Penta water but they are on the expensive side. There is a water treatment system that you can make your own. http://www.yourwellnesshome.net/productinfo/water.html

Aromatherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Anise (Pimpinella anisum)
Neroli (Citrus aurantium bigaradia)
Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

Also, you may want to do some reflecting and meditation on what is causing your irritable bowel. It is likely emotional/ stress related. Address that issue to treat/cure your irritable bowel.

Not aromatherapy or oils, but i avoid IBS by eating less meat, and when i do only VERY WELL COOKED, such as grilled chicken or near burnt burgers.

Anything less triggers IBS which is a pain to have to take into consideration while eating out.
