I've known several marriages that have broken up due to the sick relationship that Iranian men and their mothers have. It's almost like the mother wants to compete with the wife and the man acts like he is married to both of them...It's really sick and I just can't seem to understand why this is so widespread in the Iranian culture?

The relationship with mother/son/daughter is and should be different. If they want to be glued together, they might as well marry each other.

They are brought up like this and there are some mothers who do not interfere in their son's life and treat their daughters in law well
Even here in Pakistan and also in India , the culture is like that ,that causes feud between daughter in law and mother law and the son is in between ..
Its about the culture , also if the mothers understand that they were also daughters in law before , now they are ruling , so let the daughter in law be given a space to beath ,time to adjust ,,coz its not easy .....
Those mothers who understand this , make their daughters in law in peace and those who do not create a scene like you are talking about.
and the men remain confused in between .
