I would not become friends with anyone if I was going to avoid them
in the first place.
I guess people don't want to have handy cap friends because they are scared of what there other friends would think of them. or they don't want to miss out on the things like rock climbing that handicap people might not be able to do.
I'm not a super cool dude but I got my pack of friends and I am Buddy's with a few handicap people. I don't hang with them much but that's because they don't want to hangout all the time.
Handicap can mean lots of things. It can be mental or a Physical handicap.
I would rather hang out with someone with a Handicap or some form of disability rather then Cool punks like the guys next door to me that think its fun to kick cats.

because they think its different than having other friendships.
and in reality its not. but i know it is difficult for handicapped people to make friends.
people feel"ashamed if seen with other handicapped people" and that is fact.
I dont even look handicapped, but I am on breathinga nd eating. And other things. And I see that it is very hard for people to stay or want to be friends and i've yet to answer this one for myself.
although I am blessed with some of the best people in the world around my world, and their love is always there through the good times and the bad times, I know its hard to find good friends in general nowadays though.
so its just a matter of time.
and dont loose hope if you are handicapped yourself.
you are bound to find someone on here online too.
you will see. Ask God to send you friends and you will get friends. Have faith. And never loose faith keep going on and with the armor of God go through life's bads and n asty people.

Because they don't know what to say.
They're terrified of saying something that they might be sensitive about. They are afraid of saying something stupid, that might hurt their feelings.
They mean well but they just don't realize that the handicapped are just lkie everyone else and think the same way and think the same thoughts.
They are not easily offended but are easily hurt, when they go out and NOBODY will even look them in the eye, much less smile or say something.
People really need to know how happy it makes them when you treat them just like everyone else. It makes their whole day!

Not all do, some of us worked for organizations to help others, However there are those who fear the unknown" so to speak...I know a friend whos leg was blown off from the war and he can out run me! I been around many at work who are extreamly handicapped and i just have a great time...but my worse day i had was a man with no eyes no face..holding a cloth to his face so noone can see...Ill never in my life forget a group of Jerks ages 18-25 guys and girls..who stood in the isle so he couldnt get out..kicking their childs ball that got loose down another lane...and laughing and making obsene jokes..I just blew up, and told them to get out of the store and id make sure of it! I went to the break room to cool off that day, and I was shaking, I cried for that man and his family, I knew his pain

I'm not sure what you mean by the question. I have many handicapped friends, whether it be that they are mentally challenged or physically challenged and I am not afraid to hang out with them at the fairs or at the park or where ever they would like to go.

No, they're just too afraid to be with them because they might offend the handicap friends. But the handicap ones are very friendly:)

Because people can be pretty shallow and they are afraid of the "abnormal". They aren't entirely abnormal, they are still fully functional people with some "defects", and when someone is missing an arm and a leg, they look awfully different but have feelings and deserve attention and respect. Some people don't have the intelligence and understanding to grasp that concept.

I have several Handicap Friends.
So not everyone avoids them!
I don't understand why anyone would avoid them - they are great people and have very big hearts!

Everyone doesn't. But those who do are generally embarrassed by the looks they get from strangers, children, etc who point or gawk at them. People do not like to be singled out as an oddity.

I think sometimes they aren't used to being around handicapped persons and they don't know how to handle it.
