I have to answer the "why dont ameriacn's like soccer?" question ... sorry, I missed it :)
All I have to say is, the world cup this year has been fantastic to watch. So many skilled players trying their best and competing at a very high level. The refs being, well ... like guys who have never played the game. And the media blowing everything out of proportion.
I skipped work to watch, got together with friends. Talked about some of the games with total strangers. Just like I might do about football, basketball, and baseball during playoff time. Yes, I am an American, and I love soccer, as do allot more people than some want to think.
I am totally confused too, when I see people say ignorant things like "cuz we suck", or "cuz the scores are 0-0". These are people who have never watched a game. We watch 1-0 baseball games all the time, they call it a pitches duel. And we show poker, bowling, and car racing on ESPN all the time, so spare me. As for the U.S. team, they are very good, and they have allot of talent. They are one of several teams who underachieved. I seem to remember England being in a tough group in 2002 and finishing last in their group, the same year the U.S. almost took the world by storm (but one German goalie didn't let it happen). Any football fan in England knows that the U.S. is no pushover. And, guess what, Italy and Ghana might be playing pretty good soccer. They were flat against the czechs. But I thought the U.S. very well should have beaten Italy in that game, and they controlled most of the first half. the second half was different, but the U.S. still created opportunities. And lets face it, they folded against Ghana after a horrendous call in the box. Thus is life in sport.
My point is this. No, many of the best athletes in the U.S. do not play soccer. But the ones who do, are still world class athletes, non the less. Whats different here is the the TV networks can't make money off of them, like they do in other countries. Not like they can over TV and commercial rights for other sports (like football, basketball, etc.). So "the media" spins it in a way that will draw attention. And we eat it up. suckers!
(the same can be said about our current state of government)
Soccer is hugely popular in the U.S.
So don't be a meat-head and be fooled by the Media. Talk to actual human beings and find out what they think. For if America were a book, it might have a demanding and bold cover. But you wouldn't judge us all based on that ... would you?

PORTUGAL DESRVES THE CUP FOR PLAYING SO WELL!!! I'm not Portugese either, by the way...However, I have a strong feeling that Germany will win...They seem to be having the same luck that France had when the World Cup was held in their country in 1998...

i think that portugal are the 2006 underdogs.
they don't have the making of a great team
however, if they can hold on to the game and take the game to PSO. then they have great chances of winning because of the fact that they have a nice goalkeeper - Ricardo.
I think that the Germany will take the cup
I'm a brazil fan.. since they are out, i support Portugal
Go Portugal.
