I met this girl on yahoo chat, we IMed each other for a little over 3 hours and everything was cool, and it seemed like we hit it off. She asked me if I was willing to be her boyfriend (not in those words) but I told her to hold back, was that ok? Did I do wrong?

In short, yes, long distance relationships CAN work ... but you need a whole lot more foundation than one 3 hour session on an IM.

A true relationship, one that is worthy of maintaining, and worthy of holding on to, is developed over time ... through meeting, acquaintance, sharing, friendship, and then perhaps on in to something more intimate and special ... over the course of at least weeks, and preferably months.

In order to work, both persons MUST be honest, straightforward, willing to deal with the difficulties and inconveniences and loneliness of being in love but apart, and also willing to do what it takes to eventually be together.

I personally don't think most LDR's endure, especially those that originate online, because you have to spend time together in person to find out if you really are a good match. However, those that do, are worth it.

Which means, in answer to your specific question ... you need to know this (or any) person better, and spend more time getting to know each other. The IM session might have been grand ... but it may or may not be able to turn into anything more.

Be patient.

I met my husband over a dating service and we are happy and starting a family. We chatted a few times over the pc but the best way to REALLY get to know someone is to meet them. Be safe and have fun with it.
Our long distance lasted 6 months. It was VERY hard and VERY frusterating at times but we were dedicated to our relationship and things fell into place.

They don't work because it takes too much of work keeping them together. Someone is gonna give 40% and the other will give 60% won't be even.
