If you're referring to the British Commonwealth, then that pertains to the rather archaic British alliance of post-colonial nations. Not much more than symbolic these days, though the Queen does seem fond of referring and addressing the "commonwealth" at any given opportunity.
The US is not a part of this social club, as it gained independence a few hundred years ago.

A commonwealth is a territory of another country. A commonwealth is independently operated but controlled by another country. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States so they have the same benefits as citizens on the mainland.
The United States is not part of the British empire because we had a Revolution. The Revolution made us an independent body from our mother country.
It may be of some interest that Canada and Austraila are commeonwealths of Britian!

The English noun Commonwealth dates originally from the fifteenth century. The original phrase "common wealth" or "the common weal" comes from the old meaning of 'wealth' which is 'well-being'. The term literally meant "common well-being". Thus commonwealth originally meant a state governed for the common good as opposed to a authoritarian state governed for the benefit of a given class of owners, including even despots.
Today the term is more general and means a political community.

The Revolutionary might have something to do with the fact that we aren't on Brittish soil.

It sorta is if you think about who we are in debt to. But conventional theory is that why we had the revolutionary war.
